![]() The Message, I guess, is that Capitalism is, like, really bad. None are of any consequence and all are described with a pervasive air of misery to service KRZ's Message. Most locations are anonymous buildings ("church", "diner", "a house" and so forth) with barebones text descriptions which feels plain lazy. As you would expect from the name, KRZ is set in Kentucky but I got no sense of place from it. Its setting in a surreal version of rural America reminded me of Sam and Max Hit the Road but not in a good way because I found myself wanting to play Sam and Max instead. Heck, the first location even has a puzzle. As to why "not fun" has rarely been called out when it comes to reviews of this and similar games, it's because they're treated reverentially as Serious Art which means that judging them as games might be considered crass.įor its first half, KRZ wears the clothes of an adventure game: you go to places, examine objects and make choices (choices with no consequence, mind). By fun, I don't mean "my idea of fun", I mean something designed to light up pleasure centres whether that is overcoming adversity, solving puzzles or finding loot. Never did I feel that fun was one of KRZ's design goals. None of these are positive qualities in any sort of medium, least of all a game. Kentucky Route Zero is slow, whimsical, interior, elliptical and at times deliberately frustrating The generally positive Eurogamer review has an interesting blink-and-you'll-miss-it sentence: The game I played lacked focus, had myriad plots that went nowhere, endless text that took itself terribly seriously, lack of player agency and some of the most deliberately unfun sequences that I have ever endured. Reviews of the game (not just the ones I picked at random) read like religious experiences. My question is: what did I miss? It's like everyone else played a completely different game to the one I played (for want of a better word). Soulful, evocative and one of the most important games of the last decade If you've heard of this game, you've probably heard that it is the most important game of the (last) decade.
